7 Ways to Find Rest Amid Life’s Chaos

“God is still at work, even when I’m resting.”

Many of us feel the weight of crowded calendars and constant demands. In his article, Lt. Colonel Tim Foley reminds us that God calls us to create space in our lives for rest and reflection. Here is a checklist of practical ways you and your family can answer that call.

1. Pause on purpose

For you: Try taking just fifteen minutes each day with no phone and no distractions to breathe deeply and talk with God.

For your family: Pick one regular time each day, like dinner or bedtime, when everyone stops to share something they’re thankful for.

2. Create physical space

For you: Start small by tidying up one spot like your desk, your nightstand, or even your car. You’ll be surprised how clearing physical clutter can clear your mind too.

For your family: Make decluttering a team effort. Let each child pick something to give away, and use it as a chance to talk about being grateful for what we have.

3. Practice a Sabbath moment

For you: Carve out just one hour each week for genuine rest, whether that’s worship, quiet time with God, or simply being still.

For your family: Choose a Sabbath activity you can all enjoy together like taking a walk, playing a board game, or sharing a short devotional. Leave the screens behind.

4. Step away from constant connection

For you: Silence your notifications when you’re praying or resting. Your phone will still be there when you’re done.

For your family: Set up a phone-free zone or time, maybe during meals or right before bed, when everyone unplugs together.

5. Look back to see God’s faithfulness

For you: Write down three times in the past year when God provided for you or clearly guided your steps.

For your family: Share stories together about how God has helped your family or answered prayers over the years. These become treasures your children will remember.

6. Slow the pace together

For you: Say no to one thing this week that doesn’t truly need to be on your plate.

For your family: Leave one evening completely open on your calendar and just be together with no agenda required.

7. Rest as an act of trust

For you: Remind yourself in prayer: “God is still at work, even when I’m resting.”

For your family: Help your children understand that rest isn’t lazy. It’s something God designed us to need, and taking time to rest honors Him.
