In the Twin Cities, The Salvation Army has an ongoing partnership with former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver and NFL Hall of Fame inductee, broadcast analyst and entrepreneur Cris Carter, who is involved with supporting and promoting Salvation Army initiatives in person, on TV and the radio, and through social media campaigns. 

Carter has expressed passion for the work that the Army does because it’s influenced his own life. “People don’t know that The Salvation Army was there to help my family when I was growing up,” he said. “My mom raised seven kids by herself, and the assistance she received was essential for us. I want to help make sure people are made aware of the important work done by The Salvation Army.”

Carter has participated in fundraisers, back-to-school programs, Christmas bellringing and more. He also stars in the “Conversations With Cris” video series, where Carter meets with and interviews officers, employees and clients of The Salvation Army to discuss the Army’s work and how they help people every day like they helped his family. 

A significant part of Carter’s story is his struggle with addiction, which got him cut from the Philadelphia Eagles before finding his way to the Vikings. “The coach, before he cut me, he told me he didn’t believe in people like me,” Carter said. “He didn’t believe people with addiction got better.” Carter now uses his voice and partnership with The Salvation Army to prove his former coach wrong and show people where they can receive a second chance. “God did not make me a superstar in the NFL just for my own ego … He did that so I can share with people what I come from.”

“When [Cris] came to Minnesota, he realized his full potential not only as one of the greatest athletes to ever play the game, but also as a man who overcame addiction with the support of the Vikings organization and this incredible community,” said Lt. Colonel Randall Polsley, divisional commander of The Salvation Army Northern Division, noting that Carter’s journey created a genuine love for Minnesota and its people that aligns him with the Army’s mission. He goes on to add that Carter is an exceptional spokesperson and partner to The Salvation Army. “His passion and credibility have inspired individuals, businesses, and organizations across Minnesota to join us in helping neighbors who need hope and opportunity.”
