The Salvation Army in Korea Responds to Fatal and Unprecedented Wildfires

"The Salvation Army in Korea will continue its mission to bring hope and relief to those affected by this tragic event, responding to both immediate needs and long-term recovery efforts."

The Salvation Army in Korea engaged in emergency relief efforts following the single biggest wildfire ever recorded in South Korea. At least 27 people died and 37,000 people were displaced by fires spanning 88,960 acres in the southeast of the country. The fires started on March 22, 2025, and more than 320 buildings and houses were damaged, leading to a significant humanitarian crisis. Eight homes of Salvation Army soldiers were affected by the fires, and the Goe-jeong Corps was also destroyed.

THE SALVATION ARMY MOBILIZES

The Salvation Army activated its emergency relief operations, dispatching teams to the impacted areas and providing essential aid to those in need. Relief efforts focused on delivering food, water, blankets, tents and other vital supplies. Local emergency shelters, including gymnasiums and temporary evacuation centers, received continuous support from The Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army supplied daily meals in Gyeongsangnam-do (Sancheong) and Gyeongsangbuk-do (Uiseong, Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongdeok and Yeongyang) through three mobile kitchens. These kitchens served not only evacuees but also fire suppression teams, who are working tirelessly to control the fires. To date, more than 19,000 people benefited from these services, with more than 18,800 meals prepared.

RELIEF EFFORTS EXPANDED

As the situation evolved, The Salvation Army expanded its relief efforts. In Uiseong, more than 2,000 meals were provided every day, while about 400 meals were served daily in Sancheong. In Cheongsong and Yeongdeok, relief supplies, including blankets, tents and food, were distributed. Packed meals for firefighters began in Andong, and the relief team expanded its base camp to Yeongyang to address the growing needs.

The affected areas were home to many elderly residents, and there was an urgent need for continued support to help them maintain a stable and safe living environment. The Salvation Army in Korea remains committed to providing continuous assistance, with ongoing prayer and support from the international Salvation Army community.

The Salvation Army in Korea will continue its mission to bring hope and relief to those affected by this tragic event, responding to both immediate needs and long-term recovery efforts.
