Saved to Serve

A Gentle Call, A Faithful Yes

Cadet Williana Garcia reflects on answering God’s call to officership and finding joy, purpose and community in service.

How did you experience God’s calling to the officership?

My experience of God’s calling to officership was not a sudden or dramatic moment, but a persistent, gentle development that began long ago. I have always been passionate about two things: the Word of God and serving others. God used me to provide service as a nurse for several years. Although good and very rewarding, I felt that this was not my ultimate purpose. But my fears did not allow me to take the big step. The final confirmation came through practical ministry; as I became more involved in my corps, I realized that the joy and fulfillment I experienced from sharing God’s love was unmatched. This was not simply a desire of my heart, but a deep and undeniable conviction that God was leading me toward full-time, lifelong ministry as a Salvation Army officer, using the Army’s unique framework and mission to serve Him fully.

What is the greatest joy you are experiencing as a cadet?

The greatest joy I’ve experienced as a cadet is the deep sense of community and intentional spiritual growth at the College for Officer Training. My spiritual life has undergone a wonderful transformation. Now, I’m immersed in an environment where every lesson, every worship time, and every shared meal is focused on preparing to be effective servants of Christ. There is a deep joy in the brotherhood within the session, where we experience similar challenges and triumphs. We truly walk together, supporting each other in rigorous academic study and demanding fieldwork.

In addition, the intellectual and theological foundation we’re receiving is endowing me with a deeper understanding of God’s Word and The Salvation Army’s mission, transforming my faith from an individual pursuit into a mission-focused commitment, which is immensely rewarding. It fills me with joy to walk this path hand in hand with my husband, who has also answered God’s call. We love and support each other, and the best part is being in the company of our beautiful daughters. Seeing what God is doing not only in my life but in the lives of my entire family is a great blessing.

What is your advice for someone who feels called to officership but hasn’t yet responded?

Take the step, respond! There’s truly nothing better than feeling you’re walking in the purpose God designed for your life. Along the way, fear, doubt, and everything that might prevent us from serving God may arise. But from experience, I can say that God equips those He calls. He takes care of all the fears and doubts that may come; just take that step of faith and obedience to the Lord.

Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
